All Things Apple
Apples are all the rage this time of year (and all-year-round to be honest) but they are full of sweet flavor and crispness. But they aren’t all sweet. Actually, all of the apples have a slightly different flavor as well and range from sweet to tart. From the sweetest to the most tart here’s how it falls: kiku, fuji, honeycrisp, envy, ambrosia, gala, sweetie, opal, golden delicious, jazz, red delicious, pink lady, mclutosh, granny smith. Let’s go more depth on a few of the flavor profiles:
- Honeycrisp: known for their pleasant sweet-tart flavor
- Gala: mildly sweet flavor and floral aroma
- Red Delicious: mildly sweet flavor
- Fuji: mild yet sweet honey and citrus flavor
- Jonagold: a sweet combination of the Jonathan & Golden Delicious
- Granny Smith: tart, acidic but subtly sweet
- Pink Lady: “fizz-like” burst of flavor
1 small lunch box apple is roughly 55 calories, 14g carbohydrate, 2 g of fiber, 113mg potassium, and 9% of the recommended daily intake for vitamin C. So while “an apple a day, keeps the doctor away” may not be all true, it does have a good principle to it. The current recommendation is to eat 2-4 servings of fruit a day and since apples are easy and familiar, it makes sense to indulge in this small serving size fruit.
