Up Your Grilling Game

With Memorial Day coming up this Monday, many of us are making plans with our families and friends to celebrate the holiday. For some of us, that includes spending time outdoors and enjoying some delicious food and drinks! Although the holidays can be a time to splurge a little bit with our diet, there are also plenty of ways to still do the things you love to do and stay healthy while you do it! Here are some tips for how to maximize your nutrition while still enjoying the thing we all love to do on Memorial Day Weekend- grill!

Add some fruits and veggies!

Did you know that grilling not only intensifies the flavor of meats, but fruits and veggies as well? Grilling up some kebabs with chicken, steak or even seafood like shrimp and then adding some vegetables like onions, bell peppers or squash is a tasty way to sneak some veggies into your day! Or, you can even try grilling fruits and vegetables on their own for a delicious side dish, such as grilled cherries or peaches for a side salad!

Marinate before you grill!

Some research suggests that grilling can produce harmful compounds that may have negative health effects. However, there are things that you can do to reduce some of these compounds from forming. That includes marinating your proteins before cooking them! Allowing your meat to sit in an acid based marinade (such as one containing lemon juice or vinegar) for at least 30 minutes prior to grilling is recommended by the American Institute for Cancer Research. Not only can it reduce harmful compounds, but it adds a great flavor boost as well!

Utilize fresh herbs and spices!

Herbs and spices are an incredible way to not only add flavor to your dish, but reduce salt consumption and even provide antioxidant properties! Studies have shown that some herbs, such as rosemary, sage and oregano, have high antioxidant profiles and can be protective for health. Try incorporating fresh herbs and spices to your meals, like a steak with rosemary or grilled chicken with oregano and lemon juice!
